Who We Are: [editor's note: this should be called 'who we were' as Subjectivity of Sexuality Group that put out Queer Notions in the late 90's disbanded in 1999. This archived site is posted here for the sake of history and folks interested in the relationship of sexuality to revolution.] Queer Notions is a collection of writings published by a group of revolutionary queers and supporters working out of the Bay Area chapter of the News and Letters Women's Liberation Committee, a Marxist-Humanist organization. (We are sometimes known as the Subjectivity of Sexuality Group among our comrades.) We are queers activists and theorists, feminists, civil-rights fighters, environmentalists, pro-labor unionists, and Marxist-Humanist philosophers. Our aim is to develop a greater understanding of the relationship of sexuality to the creative transformation of society on human grounds. As revolutionaries we oppose capitalism in both its "free market" (sic) appearance as in the US, as well as its state-capitalist form as in the former Soviet Union, China, and Cuba. We accept no limitations to full freedom for all human beings regardless of sex, sexuality, race, religion, class, age and ability. In our endeavor to transform society, we engage in both active struggle on the streets as well as through rigorous philosophical development. We believe as Raya Dunayevskaya, founder of Marxist-Humanism, wrote, "The first act of liberation is to demand back our heads." If we are to overcome the failed revolutions of this century we must understand the thought of the age and forge battles in the realm of ideas. Also, we must creatively develop visions of the kind of society where we can all be free. We do not pretend to have all the answers to the problems we face in this brutal age of gay bashing, intolerance, religious fanaticism, "pro-family" (sic) hoopla, misogynistic, capitalistic, anti-human systems, and the destruction of the planet. We do however believe we have a lot to offer those interested in developing revolutionary queer thought and activism. We invite people from all over the world involved in a wide variety of radical political tendencies to engage in discussion of these issues. Wherever we can, we provide a forum for the free and open development of ideas and networking. Though Queer Notions is no longer in existence, News and Letters is still active.
